atart of beach volley ball season

Hello everybody. It’s the start of a new beach volleyball season and my playing partner Lucy Boulton and I are still hoping to make it to the Olympics. Unfortunately it’s a bit delayed because of a knee injury I picked up sprinting.

If it was up to me, I would’ve played through the season as it was. Luckily I had some more informed opinions from doctors and surgeons, who all assured me I wouldn't make it halfway through the Tour. So I had the surgery immediately which meant missing the tournament in March in Australia for the start of the Tour.

The surgery was so fast - less than an hour. They did an arthroscopy which meant only cutting into two points in the front of the knee. When I woke up after the surgery, the only thing that hurt was the I.V. in my hand. I actually walked out of the hospital! Isn't modern medicine amazing!

One tenth of slum dwellers live in the capital Manila, in neighbourhoods like this one in the Tondo District. Tondo is one of the oldest areas of Manila, and dates back about 1,000 years. But the past has been erased by the present. Today it's one of the most densely populated places on earth. There are 80,000 people per square kilometre, many of whom lack adequate water, housing, sanitation, education, health and employment.

Alicia's house is a two minute walk from Estella and Cricencio's, and she is one of the lucky few who was given rights to her land by the government who once owned it. "I have the deeds," beams Alicia, a single mother with two children. But her smile fades as she reflects on the reality of living in the slum. "I live about 20 metres from the river," says Alicia. "Every year when the typhoons come, my house gets flooded, and sometimes I am knee deep in water."

The river which runs through Tondo is a great source of entertainment for the many young people who live in the slum. Children spend hours swimming in it, but parts of it are choked with garbage. Some of the slum dwellers, like Estella, admit that they throw throw excrement in, because they have no toilet. The river is so polluted that it poses a serious risk to health.

This woman is fast asleep on a table in the alleyway underneath the bridge. She is oblivious to the constant sound of children at play or doing house work.

These were taken over the course of a few weeks while on my way to work, taking lunch away from work and going home from work. Basically each day that had decent shooting conditions, I went outside and choose a direction. I walked half an hour in that direction and then turned around and walked back (I only get an hour for lunch). If I saw something interesting along the way, I took a shot. This is one of my first long exposure shots. Its nothing special, but I liked climbing up onto my old high schools roof to take it.

last night i dreampt of taking photographs. i was taking pictures of a line of laundry, but i kept thinking, i don't want to be taking pictures of this anymore. i guess it's time to move on from that project.

as hard as it is for me to accept, this is the first time in my life that i can't find time for picture making. even when i was stock piling film all last year (still unprocessed by the way), i was at least still shooting. i hope this doesn't last long. this terrifies me.

The Daylight Darkroom

Speaking of hybrid techniques, I'm starting to think Epson's Perfection 4990 Photo Scanner may well be the #1 photographic accessory for film photographers. (And digital photographers who used to shoot film, too.) According to all the reviews I can find (the best seem to be Vincent Oliver's—you'll have to follow the links yourself—and Ken Rockwell's), it seems to be one of those quiet landmark products that serve a genuine need and really do work better than any of us has a right to expect.

The trick seems to be that Epson has made this scanner focus just a wee skosh above the top surface of the scanner glass—not enough to degrade paper scans, but enough to improve critical focus on negatives and transparencies. As a result, the scanner comes very close to the quality of much more expensive dedicated film scanners. From all reports, the thing is good enough to scan even 35mm negatives well enough to make good-looking prints, as long as you don't expect miracles. For proofing film and making very large digital files out of bigger negs and trannies, it seems to be the uber-scanner. Check out the user comments on Amazon (first link, above) for some insight on usability and ease of operation. Prepare to be impressed.

I've always thought the common term "digital darkroom" was maybe a bit addled. Strictly speaking, what would you do with a digital file in a real darkroom? But when you can replace the whole darkroom with a device the size of a baking pan to print big negatives and proof small ones, you've got something that does deserve a name, all right. "Daylight darkroom," maybe? I think I'm going to have to save my pfennigs.

One Very Sophisticated Hybrid Technique

Large format aficionado and all-round raconteur Jim Galli never met a brassie he didn't like. Preparing to sell an ancient B&J Ajax ƒ/5 Petzval portrait lens (right) on eBay, he found he needed some quick samples of what the old lens could do. So, short on time and film, he did what any true photo-dog would do—improvised! Jim loaded an 8x10 camera with some 8x10 paper—yes, paper, Polycontrast RC—and made some quick still lifes. He developed and dried the paper, scanned the pics, reversed the tones digitally, and voilá! A quick pic of some old boots, among other things. Now how's that for a film-digital hybrid technique? If you look closely, you can see the Polycontrast filter Jim stuck into the old lens to lower the picture contrast.

This is probably just a coincidence, but I happened to come across three remarkably similar statements from three different photographers in recent days, one of them a highly accomplished professional. Distilled to their essence, what each photographer said was, "Just one more digital camera upgrade, and I'm done."

I don't know how many people out there don't know this, but if you've been having similar thoughts, good luck on that there, bubba. Digital is great and all, but once you're on the merry-go-round, you're on it. There's never gonna be one last upgrade—for cameras any more than computers or operating systems. That ain't the land you live in now. This is the Hotel California. You're hooked, you're cooked.

It's rather odd, but John Szarkowski is a photographer.

Odd, because the 30-year Director of the Photography Department at the Museum of Modern Art is one of the most influential curators in photography's history, and one of the best writers ever to turn his hand to the subject.

As an artist, the more-or-less 80-year-old Szarkowski jokes, he's had an early period and a late period, and he intends to get started on his middle period soon.

It should go without saying that he has a good eye. Well, he does. And he's been resolutely shooting film with large cameras in the 15 years since he retired—his late period—and, I would suspect, having the prints made under his direction by the best custom printers. (I doubt he does his own printing.)

It should also go without saying that he knows how to put together a show. Well, he does. So you take a good eye, big negs, expert printing, in beautiful frames, ordered intelligently on gallery walls...I just can't see how any photographer wouldn't enjoy seeing this. Although not in the essential category, it's definitely the kind of show you really have to see firsthand to appreciate. I saw it in Milwaukee when it visited the Calatrava addition, and was even a little surprised by how eye-pleasing it was. John Szarkowski, photographer—who knew?

Getty Claiming Copyright to National Archives Images and Selling Them

It seems that Getty Images learned a few years ago that they could buy 4x5 negatives of images from the US National Archives for $5 each. They bought thousands. Now they are selling these same images through their stock agency and claiming copyright on them. The vast majority of the images in the National Archives were taken by government employees and are public domain.

As public domain images, these images belong to us, the U.S. public. Getty, or anyone else, has absolutely no right to claim copyright to these images and sell them.

We need to spread the word on this, and any of Getty's customers who have paid to license such images should demand an immediate and full refund.

This is easily my favourite shot I have ever taken. It was the last shot on what was most likely my last roll of film for a while. A couple pieces of white paper, a dark room, a cable release and a manually released flash was all it took (can't forget to thank Kate for dropping the water! I only have two hands).

As usual sharpness and quality is lost due to scanning, but I think it still looks great!

I went to Waterloo's public zoo/park and tried to get some shots of the animals in the cages. Out all the shots of llama's, rabbits, deer and turkeys, it was the free animals that gave me the best shot.

Karen Chatham, the young woman in blue, recalls that she had been out drinking when she met up with Lesa Aldridge, the woman in red. tripod resolution

Every now and then when the moon is almost full I grab my camera. I think it's because I love the phrase "waxing gibbous moon." Waxing is the opposite of waning; it means it's getting bigger. And gibbous is the opposite, or the complement, of crescent; it means a partial moon larger than a half moon. I've always wanted to title a picture Waxing Gibbous Moon.

Two nights ago I took the camera out by the garage and took this. I tell myself in those situations that there's no time for a tripod. For this shot, I turned on "Anti-Shake" (actually, I never turn Anti-Shake off) and jammed the camera up against the garage door.

When I saw that the exposure wasn't totally sharp and the moon was still blown out (this would be a good application for two quick exposures blended with one of those actions that combines two exposures for extended dynamic range—I'm not just imagining that those exist, am I?), I had one of those "tiny epiphanies" of which my days are full—I realized I dislike tripods on principle. That is, I don't think of myself as a tripoddy kind of person, all finicky and particular. I'm an anti-tripodite.

I have a friend named Christopher Bailey who was once a house painter. I remember keeping him company once four stories above Georgetown. I couldn't leave the window, but Chris was scampering around on boards laid on scaffolding with nothing under him but sidewalk, dizzyingly far below. Now, I'm scared of heights, dramatically so, so just watching him had my stomach in knots. At one point I said, "Chris, aren't you afraid of falling?"

At that, he started jumping up and down on one of the boards, which flexed beneath him and then flung him upwards. He jumped on it like it was a trampoline. "Oh, I don't know," he said, "I just feel like if I fall, I'll get my hands on something."

Bingo. That's how I feel about steadying the camera. I'll use anything and everything to brace the camera on or against—mantelpieces, car windows, someone's back, whatever. I like to extemporize. More than that, I like to think of myself as someone who can extemporize. Even when I do use a tripod, I just jam the camera down on the top plate with my hands—I seldom actually attach the camera to the tripod head. What I realized the other night is that I avoid tripods just because of this self-conception I have—even when they're called for, and would be appropriate and useful. There was really no reason at all not to grab a tripod when I went inside to get the camera the other night.

So here's my resolution. The next time I shoot a waxing gibbous moon (granted, the shot above is another miss), I'm going to get the tripod out, and use it properly. In fact, I'm going to try to use my tripod more often in general. I don't care for "tripod snobs," but being an anti-tripod snob is no better.

So you're at your friend's wedding. You're in your folding chair. You've got your program (it's rolled into a telescope). Your eye makeup looks pretty. Your under-eye circles have been masterfully camouflaged. You're enjoying the show... then the vows. You get choked up before they even start. The tearing reaches situation critical very quickly. You're dabbing repeatedly at your eyes with a wadded up kleenex so that you don't get mascara streaks down your face. But dabbing never works. No, never. Always with the streaking.
You know what does work? Evaporation. The fanning works. Fanning, not streaking. I swear.
You know what else fans are great for? Cooling hot wedding guests at outdoor ceremonies. Pretty sandalwood fans work well. They're great as functional favors, just distribute before the ceremony rather than after.

BTW: Escort cards sit all together at a table near the entrance to the reception space, telling your guests which table is theirs. Placecards sit at the dining tables, telling your guests which seat is theirs. As someone who deals with this distinction on a daily basis, I notice that the two names are often used interchangeably. They are indeed different. I realize that this fact will only be important to you for a very short time in your life, but I thought you might like to know. Please excuse the smarty-pants moment.

danny freakin' tagged me. i've never been tagged before. i'm still in shock. i was a blog-tag virgin. blogging is such a strange world. i can't help but wonder if i was included in her list as a secret ploy to get me to blog about something (anything) again. so here goes:

1/ i obsessively twirl my hair. to the point where strangers have come up to me to tell me how mesmerizing they find watching me do it.

2/ i have a scar down the center of my tongue from when, as a four year old, i hit my head on a diving board whilst trying to do a flip. i've never been able to flip since, and this includes a three year stint on a diving team (just so you know, a basic flip is the basis of almost every dive).

3/ i love christmas.

4/ i'm a fraternal twin. our birthday was tuesday.

5/ i don't like ice cream all that much. the massive combination of sugar and dairy makes me kind of sick. i do however like cookies. a lot.

6/ i still wear my retainer.

7/ i once broke a girl's nose. we were goofing off during swim practice and our game went awry. she was gushing blood. i didn't accept that it was broken until five years later. i sincerely thought she was joking, but she pulled me aside one day and was like, listen, you really broke my nose.

8/ i am currently staying on the couch of a friend in brooklyn, as i don't have a home. searching for an apartment is worrying the devil out me and consuming my entire life.

out with cold

i started writing this post well over two weeks ago, but got sidetracked (as often happens). i think that posting it on new years eve is quite fitting though:

i processed film for the first time since graduating (june 06) thursday night. it sparked an avalanche. yesterday i processed 6 times in a row, officially working through half my pile of neglected film. my aim is to get through the remainder by this friday.

i intentionally threw all the film into one bowl refusing to differientiate the newer work from the older because i knew if i knew which ones were which i might never have touched the older ones. of course this made the experience of looking through the images much more difficult. very scary. i didn't even want to look at the older ones because i feel such a strong urge to move on, but then when i finally saw that some of those images were rather stunning compared to the newer ones in which none of my ideas are fully developed yet, i was rather demoralized. but over all i think the new work is headed in an exciting direction. and i still have 12 plus rolls to process so the adventure continues.

special thanks to lisa elmaleh for constantly nagging me to process my film at her house and for subsequently driving my chemicals back to my apartment (and for getting that stupid filter off my faucet). the diptych below is hers.

I stumbled across Estate Diamond Jewelry.com by accident, and found some of the most beautiful engagement ring settings I have ever seen. I absolutely love the setting with the Asscher cut diamond on the left hand side. The princess cut one, surrounded by the sapphires is also just amazing. Granted, if it were me, I might not want quite such an enormous diamond. I might even substitute the diamond in some of these settings for something else. An aquamarine? A sapphire? A citrine? I can't imagine any stone looking bad!

We've received so many nice housewarming gifts since we've moved in to the new house. One of my favorites was this collection of five white vases by Rosanna (they also have a colored collection of the same vases). If you're looking for thoughtful off-registry wedding gift, a great item to add to your own registry, or just a treat for yourself, these are awesome. I love mine so much that if I know I'm having people over and we're going to be hanging out in the kitchen, I'll move them all to the kitchen. i've been posting mainly about photography recently. or really exclusively about photography and not at all about anything wedding related. but since we are wedding photographers i think i really need to represent both aspects more fairly, and since i spend an equal amount of time looking at wedding sites as photo sites, balancing the posting between the two should work out rather well. so in an effort to even the score:

let me start by saying that in recent times i have become a stationary fanatic. i guess it started with my own endeavors into printmaking (see: blue | print), but i have developed a great deal of respect for well-designed, paper goods (i.e.: expect to see a great deal of posts about wedding invitations). i especially love handmade stationary and anything letterpressed. bird and banner, a team of two women graphic designers, is by far my personal favorite. they offer less traditional invitations that often incorporate such handmade craft elements as sewn and embroidered embellishments or using fabric in place of paper, and often they hand-write the text into the design. they also incorporate personal aspects of each wedding into their designs: for a wedding in philadelphia (the city of brotherly love), they used a heart shape that seems reminiscent of a handcut valentine card, and for the above hydrangea image for a wedding in vermont, they printed directly onto maple wood. but however craft-inspired their ideas, their execution is flawless leaving you with the impression that you are holding something precious that deserves to be treasured.

well spun weddings creates the best wedding videography i've ever seen. based in philadelphia, jon gangwer documents weddings in an ethereal and beautiful way. he started the business after being dissatisfied with the videography options available for his own wedding. shooting digitally, jon creates films that have the look of 16mm film, espcially those of his films in black and white. He also offers the photography services of a talented photographer named monika broz who is a member of the wedding photojournalist association (although i highly encourage you to higher us, bluebird photography, instead).

sweet pea started out primarily as a florist, but has grown to include a wide selection of fine gifts (like the soap top right, and the 10" decorative plate in the bottome left) and they also offer registry services. like many other professionals in the wedding industry (including both well spun weddings and bird and banner), philadelphia native and owner, shelby fraser, started out by designing the floral arrangements for her own wedding; she had previously spent time in new york working in the photography industry.

Gorgeous jewelry over at Raul Frisneda Jewelry. My favorites are the earrings, no wait, the bracelet. No! Wait! The ring. It's the ring. Who cares, they're all amazing. They leave me wishing for an occasion for dressing in jewels.
That reminds me. Today, is a very special day. Today is the LOST premiere. I'm a total LOST junkie. So much so that whenever I type LOST, I must use all CAPS, like in the logo... LOST! I must admit that the event is bittersweet. When we lived in Brooklyn I would host "LOST Night" every Wednesday. My friends would all come over and I would make dinner. It was the highlight of my week. Now that we're in Rhode Island, and my dear friends are far far away, LOST Night is sure to be a little sad. Luckily I have Sawyer to distract me from all the sadness.

OK. I'm back. Whoever, (Mom?) made the comment about morning sickness, HA! Not so much. I'm fine, just a touch of the flu maybe? Anyway, got a great tip today from Luna Bazaar about their awesome lantern collection. I love, love, love their selection of shaped eyelet lanterns, and think they all would look amazing hung low over guest tables, lit from within in groupings of three or so? At these prices, you can afford to get a bunch. The light coming through the little holes in the eyelet will be fantastic!
